Keeping a journal for your direct sales business will keep you accountable for building your business on a regular basis.

Often we think we are taking the steps to build our business but when we look back over our activities in our journals, we find that we did not really invest the time speaking with others.

If you are in direct sales you are in a people business. In order to build our businesses we must speak to other people.

Record your business activities in your journal. Did you invest time making phone calls today? Did you invest time handing out business cards today? Did you invest time participating in forums today? Did you invest time placing ads today?

It can also be helpful to record your results with those you do speak to. Are you supposed to call them back? Are you supposed to mail something to them? Did you tell them you’d get back to them with an answer of some sort?

Do you have any link exchanges? How often do you check to make sure those links are still active and that your link is still displayed on their site?

Are you contacting new people about link exchanges?

Consider color coding your entries either by highlighting them or by writing in different colored ink.. Blue is an action completed. Red will require a follow up on your part. Then when you review your journal you’ll be able to see exactly what actions you need to take based on the red in your journal. When that item is complete, use blue to cross it off.

As you build a team, your journal can also let you keep track of training you offer to your new distributors. Have you shown them how to place their first order? Have you discussed goals with them? Have you asked them how they’re doing and what questions they have?

If you have a website and/or blog, have you updated lately? Often two weeks go by and I realize I need some new content on my website. I can see this by viewing the last time I made an update on my site.

When you have a direct sales business, there are a lot of things you need to do to grow your business. Keep track of them in a journal and act on those that are highlighted in blue.
